Church and Ministry Budgeting 101

Church Budgeting 101

Whatever your size of church or ministry, a budget is a basic document that aids in planning and leadership.

As a service to our clients, Ministry Pacific offers this free workshop – open to all – on church and ministry budgeting. It’s presented by Max Herr, president of Church Compliance and Ministry Consulting.

Churches have wildly differing degrees of budgeting practices. On one end, balancing a checkbook may be the closest thing to a church budget. At the other extreme, a church may employ the services of a professional accounting firm to guide the process or have full-time staff devoted to financial management.

But whatever your size of church or ministry, a budget is a basic document that helps you govern and plan. Budgets routinely need to be tweaked, but at least there’s a plan to begin with. It’s a guide to decision making that helps you identify your projected resources and to manage those effectively. A well-managed budget also gives confidence to contributors both inside and outside your church or ministry.

In this presentation, Max shares how successful churches typically use one of three time-tested models of budgeting to plot their course. Each one takes a slightly different approach to allocating funds across the needs of the church. Church budget options include:

  • Traditional Budgeting

  • Activity-based Budgeting

  • Zero-based Budgeting

Presenter Max Herr, CEO of Church & Ministry Compliance Consulting, served his church as treasurer for more than 10 years, during which time the church’s budget doubled.  Reasonable budgets and clear financial reports were key elements of that growth and set the stage for the church to greatly expand its ministries to children and youth – the true lifeblood of a church.

In this 75-minute webinar, Max shares his knowledge and experience and explains each of the three models of budgeting. This training explores the need for a foundational chart of accounts, the pros and cons of each budgeting model, and the correct steps to take when creating an annual budget.

Max Herr has more than 25 years of experience in insurance, financial services, compliance and governance, including more than 10 years as a church treasurer. Max served as a church compliance specialist for the California Southern Baptist Convention for six years.
