Put a stopper on the theft of copper

Copper theft is rampant and churches, houses of worship and nonprofits are often easy targets.

Replacing copper costs a whopper. It’s much cheaper – and less stressful – to invest in theft prevention.

When it comes to copper banditry, air conditioners are a prime target. Thieves can be bold and brazen when it comes to pulling off their heists. Units weighing thousands of pounds have been pulled off second-story rooftops in broad daylight. And of course most other units are much easier to steal.

In addition to the sheer cost, worship services in a 90 degree building (or hotter) are best avoided. The same is true for occupying any space that requires cooling, whether it’s a school, office or warehouse.

The demand for copper is making it a profitable commodity – so profitable that thieves see an opportunity to cash in. Air conditioners’ copper components make them prime targets. Churches and nonprofits are often easy targets. But they don’t have to be.

Our infographic and list below present eight ways to "Arrest Copper Theft." Consider the options that are right for your congregation, then take action.

Doing something is better than doing nothing. Most crime prevention tactics are deterrents. They aren’t absolutely foolproof. Instead, they slow criminals down by creating barriers. The more the better.

EIGHT WAYS TO ARREST COPPER THEFT

Light it up
Thieves prefer darkness. Make sure your property is well lit.

Install fences and gates
These deterrents make it more difficult for thieves to get near your property.

Limit access
Remove ladders and lock doors and gates that provide access to HVAC equipment.

Cage it
Surround your HVAC unit with a metal cage.

Install security cameras
Unless cameras are monitored, they can’t stop a crime in progress. But their presence can be a deterrent and provide evidence for prosecution if your property is targeted.

Install alarms
Alarms can be mounted to HVAC units that make noise and provide alerts.

Request patrols
Share your concerns about copper theft with law enforcement and invite them to include your property in regular patrols.

Create a plan
Copper theft can most effectively be addressed in the context of a broader security team that seeks to comprehensively safeguard your people and property. Consider creating a team and giving it stake in the safety of your organization and its resources.

Finally, a word of caution
Avoid direct confrontation with criminals or strangers on your property. It's not worth the risk of someone's life. When in doubt, call the police.
