ABOUT kentucky CHURCH INSURANCE
Religious organizations, ministries and nonprofits play a vital role in Kentucky. The Bluegrass State is home to more than 5,000 houses of worship and more than 21,000 nonprofits. Property and liability insurance can be a critical ministry partner for churches and other community-based organizations.
Property insurance risks in Kentucky
As a Southern state, albeit in the border region, Kentucky faces storm-related risks including high winds, hail and tornadoes. Damaged roofs and siding are frequent sources of property insurance claims. Flash floods are a related hazard.
Although the state can be characterized as having moderate weather, northern and mountainous regions can experience more than 20 inches of snow per year, including blizzards. In addition, snow in Kentucky is often characterized as wet and heavy, as opposed to light and fluffy. This dense snow is more likely to cause damage to roofs and power infrastructure. In 2026, a storm resulted in parts of northern Kentucky receiving up to 13 inches of snow and central and eastern areas accumulating nearly an inch of ice. In 1993, an epic storm dumped 25 inches of snow on eastern Kentucky in 24 hours. In addition to roof damage, sub-freezing temperatures can result in frozen and burst pipes. If unattended for more than a few hours, even a small leak can cause massive damage to a house of worship or nonprofit building.
Central Kentucky’s limestone bedrock is home to some spectacular cave formations, but is also susceptible to sinkholes. Although Kentucky is rarely thought of as a state with seismic risks, it borders the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which registers hundreds of micro-quakes annually. It is the site of a catastrophic 1812 earthquake.
Liability risks
Kentucky ministries and faith-based organizations face liability risks similar to their counterparts in other states. General liability (often called “slip-and-fall”) insurance is the first line of defense. But other coverages, including sexual misconduct, cyber security, employment practices, and embezzlement, are recommended.
about KingsCover
A solution built for churches, on purpose.
Over the past decade churches across the country have experienced rising premiums, shrinking coverage options, and fewer insurers willing to serve ministries – particularly around property, liability, counseling, and protection of children and vulnerable adults. KingsCover was built differently on purpose, with long-term ministry protection at the center.
