Property insurance risks in Illinois
Illinois’ geography is diverse, meaning southern counties often experience markedly different climactic conditions than northern regions and the Lake Michigan/Chicago area. The central and southern farm belt seasonally experience tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, unleashing wind and hail damage. Frigid temperatures, chiefly but not only in northern counties, can result in frozen and bursting pipes. Snowfall varies dramatically from north to south, ranging from near 40 inches on Lake Michigan to about 10 inches near the Ohio River. In areas prone to accumulation, ice dams can form on roofs, resulting in water damage. Strain on rooftops is another complication of snowpack.
