Mission Protection Library
The best insurance claim is the one that never happens.
Why? Because claims mean that people or property were harmed. Nobody wants that. It also means your mission has been distracted or disrupted.
Insurance is a firewall for when you’ve done all you can and something still goes wrong. But everybody wins if nothing gets broken in the first place. Many lawsuits against houses of worship and nonprofits come from situations that could have been prevented.
The resources in the Mission Protection Library cover two concepts:
Things you're required to do (government mandates)
Things you're wise to do (actions that make claims and chaos less likely)
In business, these ideas are called risk management. But in nonprofit and ministry work, they can be better understood as mission protection. Risk management is often reluctantly embraced by cause-oriented people. Why?
They’re focused on vision and passion, not details.
They tend to think the best of everyone.
They’re optimistic and don’t think about worst-case scenarios.
Being an effective leader does not require pessimism or cynicism. It requires a mindset shift to understand that time spent on preventing risk is time spent protecting and advancing the mission.
Knowledge is power. Please make the most of these free resources and share them with others.
“When planning for a year, plant corn. When planning for a decade, plant trees. When planning for life, train and educate people.”
Protect the people you serve and the mission you've built.
