Hawaii: A diverse state with a flourishing faith community

Hawaii is home to more than 1.4 million people, including about 800 churches and more than 7,000 nonprofit organizations. The Aloha State’s unique location and history give it one of America’s most unique and varied expressions of religious faith. There is a plurality of Protestants, followed by Catholics and also a strong contingent of Buddhists (along with smaller percentages of other faiths). These statistics are reflective of and related to its demographic diversity. Hawaii’s religious and community organizations rely on property insurance to protect their facility investments and liability insurance to defend them from litigation-related risks.

Insurance-related risks for Hawaii ministries
When you enter The Aloha State, you can say goodbye to freezing temperatures and frozen pipes. Only the tops of its highest peaks receive snow, ice or frigid temps. However, the islands are buffeted by cyclones, which unleash high-velocity winds and flash floods. High winds and rain are key drivers of roof damage. In addition, non-tropical weather, called Kona storms, can also result in heavy rains, landslides and wind damage.

While the U.S. Geological Survey monitors 169 potentially active volcanoes across 12 states, Hawaii’s active volcanoes are the most well-known. Although they make dramatic TV footage, they also present real dangers to people and property. Landslides, fissures and lava flows have destroyed hundreds of homes in the last few decades. Hawaii’s inclusion in the Pacific Ring of Fire also puts it at risk of underwater earthquakes and tsunamis.

Wildfires, however, are rarely linked to lava flows and are usually the result of human activity. The 2023 Maui fires killed more than 100 people and destroyed more than 2,200 structures. Although some parts of the Hawaiian Islands receive more than 400 inches of rain (more than any other U.S. state), other regions receive 10 inches or less. Rain-fuels thick vegetation growth, which can become kindling for wildfires once the weather becomes more arid.

Hawaii’s isolation drives up the cost of repair and rebuilding houses of worship and nonprofit facilities. Nearly all components, and often workers, must be imported. When shortages of construction materials and labor cross with a surge in demand, prices can spike. The state’s large inventory of facilities built with single-wall construction presents an additional insurance liability. This style, used through the 1980s, economized on wall thickness, insulation and structural stabilizers. As a result, these single-wall buildings are vulnerable to high winds and fires.

Finding church and nonprofit insurance in Hawaii
Can houses of worship and ministries in Hawaii obtain competitively priced insurance? Churches and nonprofit organizations can find the best options by using the services of an independent insurance broker. Brokers, such as Ministry Pacific, can act autonomously and are not employed by insurance companies. This allows them to objectively assess rates, policies, and the financial stability of multiple insurance providers serving Hawaii. There is no cost to the client.
